What Causes Etching on Travertine Tiles

And How to Prevent It

We were recently called out to inspect a Travertine-tiled shower room that had developed several unsightly marks after being cleaned with a common bathroom cleaner. The issue? The cleaner contained acidic compounds that caused what’s known as etching.

Etching is a chemical reaction which occurs when acidic or high-alkaline substances come into contact with calcium-based natural stones like Travertine, Limestone, or Marble. It leaves behind dull, often rough patches on the surface and it’s unfortunately a common problem we see.

What Is Etching?

Etching is essentially a chemical burn. It happens when acidic or alkaline substances react with the minerals in natural stone, damaging the surface and leaving it dull, faded, or slightly rough to the touch.

The most affected stones are: Travertine, Limestone and Marble

The good news? Etching can be professionally repaired. With the right restoration process, the stone’s appearance and finish can be brought back to life.

How to Clean and Care for Travertine Properly

To keep Travertine and other natural stones in excellent condition, follow these best practices:

Use a pH-neutral cleaner made specifically for natural stone

✅ Wipe surfaces with a non-abrasive microfiber cloth
✅ Avoid any DIY mixtures involving vinegar, lemon, baking powder, or bleach

These simple steps will help preserve the stone’s appearance and prevent long-term damage.

Key Travertine Facts

Travertine is a porous natural stone. It can absorb liquids easily, making it prone to staining.

It can chip or crack, but these issues are often repairable. We can fill holes, remove stains and resin-fill cracks. All repairs are subject to an on-site survey for a full identification process.

Applying a sealer helps repel water and protect against stains. A stone sealer should be reapplied regularly to maintain effectiveness. We can provide maintenance plans.
