Oak Hallway Floor Sanding & Finishing in Nuneaton: A Complete Guide

Sanding Stage of Solid Oak Hallway Floor

When sanding an oak floor, we would typically follow a three-stage process depending on the floor’s wear layer, surface damage and existing coating or finish.

For this recent project in Nuneaton, we used the flexi sand machine as it was a narrow hallway. We began the first process starting with a 50-grit abrasive, followed by 60 and 80-grit abrasives. The first phase is the most aggressive cut, removing the dark finish, surface damage and marks.

The oak floor was hoovered removing any dry debris present. The main surface area was sanded first, followed by the edges and corners. For these areas, we used a hand-held tool since the flexi sand can’t reach those tight spots.

The final phase of sanding left the floor smooth and prepped for the finishing stage, with 100 and 120-grit abrasives applied to ensure an even finish on the Oak hallway floor.

Finishing Stage: Water Popping & Hard Wax Oil Application

During any finishing stage, we use a variety of hard waxes, hard wax oils or lacquers which are available in multiple shades.

After sanding the floor up to 120-grit abrasives, we moved on to the first phase of the finishing stage.

We applied a technique known as Water Popping. This technique helps the oil penetrate deeper into the Oak floor. Working along the grain over 3-4 planks at a time, we made sure to avoid the water pooling or any splash marks. Water Popping involves applying water directly to the surface to open up the hard grain of the wood.

Definition from Wiktionary:

Water Popping: A technique used in carpentry to open the grain of wood flooring by applying clean water to its surface before staining and finishing it.

After the water was applied, we left the floor to dry naturally for about an hour. Once dry, we proceeded with the application of the two-component hard wax oil, carefully working it across the surface. We demonstrated various hard wax oils to the customer through a test patch area, allowing them to select the ideal shade for their hallway.
