Travertine Kitchen Floor Restoration Battram, Ibstock

Last week, we had the pleasure of restoring a beautiful Travertine kitchen floor in Battram, Ibstock. During our on-site survey, the customer asked BC Stone and Floor Care to inspect some cracks and holes in the floor. Initially, they requested a high-shine finish, but as the project progressed, the scope of work evolved.

Professional Deep Clean

On day one, Chris began by ensuring all walkways were covered and any kickboards were removed or taped off to minimise water exposure and prevent damage. The floor was then deep cleaned, working in sections throughout the kitchen to ensure thoroughness.

Repair Work

Travertine tiles are naturally porous and can develop holes over time. This floor had sustained two holes. After cleaning the edges of the holes, they were filled and left to dry. We resurfaced the tiles for a smooth finish. The customer had already repaired some cracks in the tiles, but during our process, we noticed some lippage. This was addressed by resurfacing the area before the honing stage.

Honing

Chris started honing the floor in preparation for the polishing stage which was planned for the following day. For those unfamiliar with the term, honing opens the face of the stone and lightens its colour, giving it a more even appearance. Honing involves grinding the surface of the tiles with a diamond impregnating pad to achieve a smoother finish.

Densifier Application

Since Travertine is naturally porous and the face of the stone had been opened, a densifier was applied to fill the micro-holes. The densifier hardens the stone, making it more durable.

Scope of Work Amendment

After seeing the floor at the end of day one, the customer decided to change the scope of work and requested a matt finish instead of the high-shine one initially planned. BC Stone and Floor Care were more than happy to adjust to this new request.

Sealer

On the final day, we applied a penetrating sealer to the floor. The floor was worked in sections to allow the sealer to dry in stages. While the sealer required 24 hours to fully cure, the floor was accessible within a few hours, allowing the customer to return to normal use.
