Oak Worktop Restoration in Ardens Grafton – From Black Stains to Beautiful Finishes
When your solid wood worktops start to show their age, dull patches, deep black water stains and uneven wear — it might seem like replacement is the only option. But that’s far from the truth. At BC Stone and Floor Care, we recently completed a full wooden worktop and floor restoration in Ardens Grafton transforming stained and tired oak surfaces into something truly beautiful and built to last.
Project Overview: Black-Stained Oak Worktops in Ardens Grafton

This kitchen in Ardens Grafton featured solid oak worktops that had suffered years of use. The area around the sink had developed deep black water stains, a common issue caused by trapped moisture.
But rather than ripping everything out, we provided a professional sand and refinish service, bringing the wood back to life without removal and mess.
We delivered a full professional sanding and hard wax oil finish, giving the worktops a new lease of life while maintaining their natural warmth and character.
Why We Use Hard Wax Oil for Kitchen Worktops
Hard wax oil is our go-to product for wooden worktop restoration, especially in high-use areas like kitchens. We use leading brands such as Overmat Floor Service 2K Hard Wax Oil, available in a variety of shades.
Benefits of hard wax oil for kitchen worktops:
- Deep-penetrating protection that enhances the wood grain
- Food-safe once cured – perfect for food prep areas
- Water-resistant and stain-resistant surface
- Easy to maintain and reapply in future
- No artificial shine – just a natural finish
Sustainable & Cost-Effective
We believe in restoring rather than replacing wherever possible and this project proves just how effective that approach can be.
By using dust-free sanding and on-site refinishing, we preserved the integrity of the existing worktops and delivered a finish that’s:
Durable
Food-safe
Water-repellent
Environmentally responsible
It’s a smarter, more sustainable alternative to replacement and one that delivers stunning results.
Our Step-by-Step Worktop Restoration Process
1. Surface Prep & Area Protection
We start by masking adjacent surfaces – tiles, splashbacks, cabinetry – to keep your kitchen protected. Then we thoroughly clean and prep the surface, removing any items or debris.
2. Dust-Free Professional Sanding
Using industrial-grade sanding equipment with integrated dust extraction, we carefully removed the damaged surface layer. Working through a sequence of grit abrasives, we eliminated the black water stains and restored an even surface. The final sanding stage used a 120-grit abrasive. Often referred to as the ‘fine’ finish — to prepare the wood for the hard wax oil. This approach ensures a smooth, even surface ready for finishing.
3. Application of 2K Hard Wax Oil
Once sanding is complete, a thin coat of hard wax oil is applied with a brush, following the grain. Excess is wiped away to prevent buildup. After drying (usually overnight), a second coat is applied for extra depth and durability
4. Full Cure Time is Crucial
Although the surface feels dry within a few hours, full curing takes several days. Once cured, the result is a tough, water-repellent finish that’s easy to clean and maintain.

Floor Sanding and Refinishing: The Final Touch
After restoring the worktops, we turned our attention to the Oak floor in the same Ardens Grafton kitchen.
By sanding and refinishing the floor, we created a cohesive, beautifully restored space with both surfaces complementing each other in finish, tone, and durability.
